Another month gone and preparing my portraits each Sunday evening is becoming a lovely habit.

I am really enjoying the process of setting up each shot, thinking and writing my captions and the interactions they bring from the Instagram community - #julias52portraits

September looked like this:

Women's Rights

For as long as I can remember I have been filled with an utter disbelief that some people see men as stronger, better, more valued than women. That sometimes men will be paid more for the same job, have better human rights and not constantly be victims. I remember hating the freedom my brother got over me, not only for being older but for being a less vulnerable male. I hated the stories my mum and grandma told me about sexist experiences they had encountered, and then feeling despair when similar things happened to me. I stand for women's rights because girls shouldn't have this injustice thrust onto them, all women deserve to be treated equally to men and it's not dramatic or women's issues or better than it has been - it's wrong

The most important meal of every day. I love breakfast food and enjoy the true decadence it brings; jam, tea, cereal, toast, pancakes, fruit….. an ideal day for me is breakfast foods for every meal. One of my happiest memories from childhood is eating jam on toast during a family holiday to France. I can't convey how important breakfast is to me and if I could have both breakfast and brunch every day I would be living my best life!

I love to read. It’s how I end almost every day and the magic of being transported into another place through your own imagination is just so much fun for me. I started when I was pretty small and had a really hard time with spelling, my mum recommended reading and really encouraged me into it. I was allowed as many books and magazines from the library as I wanted and spent hours in my room, in the garden, in the car, with my head in a book.

I know I was a bit ashamed as a child to be so passionate about reading - I hated people seeing my bookcase full of books.. why? I have no idea! Was it because no one else really read as much as I did? I thought I’d be called a geek? Who knows... but it is something I have managed to get over. I look forward to travelling because I know I can get into a book, I sometimes think I am remembering a memory but it’s actually something I read. I undoubtedly know that it did help with my spelling and I am so grateful for having bookworm parents who also handed down this hobby to me. I am slowly working my way through their Stephen King collection, coveting a beautiful hardback version of the handmaid's tale and always look forward to bedtime when I can shut off from the day, relax and read.

I was once a woodland creature (more on this in future portraits) and I feel at home here. Any woods, in any place. Surrounded by foliage, creatures and quiet, uninterrupted space.

October will bring it's own new challenges as I am away and planning on capturing my love of travel whilst there..
