GET MESSY CREATIVE TEAM 2017 | BLOG HOP

This is a bittersweet post for me as the end of 2017 also marks the end of my place on the Get Messy Art Journal Creative Team..! I am sad to leave the team but also super excited to hand over the colourful baton to the entirely new Mess Makers of 2018.

This post today is a way of saying goodbye from the 2017 creative team, we are participating in a blog hop and celebrating one another's artistic styles. Please follow on from my post to the wonderful Riet and then on wards to each CT member from her Instagram post until you end back at me!

Riet's style is one of romantic and poetic nature. Everything she touches has a fairy tale feel to it and her ink work is so dreamy. I also love how vocal she is about women's rights through her art and how often she reaches for the stencil to letter out quotes.

After a quick Instagram stalk these are some of my favourite Riet pages...

And a few created by me; inspired by Riet!

I focused on strong females, fierce quotes and stencil lettering

Please hop over to Riet's Instagram now to continue the GMCT 2017 hop!

GET MESSY 2017 | NATURE WEEK 3

It's the week before Christmas 2017; I have finished work, wrapped all my gifts and have a free afternoon to sit down with the latest Get messy prompts

In almost every piece this week, I added a bird from my North African birds book. I love this book so much that I have a real tormented time using bits from it. I obviously want to use these beautiful birds in my artwork (especially as we are in the Season of Nature!) but I hate seeing them go and not being able to use them again!

Some of them just sit perfectly with my abstract scraps

An overview of this week's pieces

Diagonal

Blue

Pink

And I am already considering new configurations for next week!

I have been taking over the Get Messy Instagram account all this week so come over and say hi!

COLLAB JOURNALS | WITCHES WITH VANESSA

The collab journals that I started this summer are starting to become final, completed bodies of work. It is so cool to see what they have become and to own some amazing original artwork, as well as to have my own work in the homes of my friends and contemporaries. Today, I am sharing my finished witches journal; a collaboration with Vanessa. Hop on over to her blog after reading this, as she will also be sharing her finished journal!

Vanessa added the graffiti on the left, the orange moon and the crown - one of her trademark illustrations

Vanessa added to my page the eyes, ladybird and grass

I made a black cat the last page - we are both cat-owners (our familiars) so it seemed only right to end with a feline friend!

GET MESSY 2017 | NATURE WEEK 2

Week 2 of the season of nature!

This week I was focusing on particualr weather themes; ice, snow, rain etc and how they make me feel, what colours and textures they bring to mind

Winter
- felt tip, oil pastel, ink, watercolour, collage

Winter for me is frost covered everything. A layer of cold over the ground. Oil pastel over layers of mixed media helped me show this visually

Spring
 - felt tip, oil pastel, ink, watercolour, collage

When colour comes back around!

Rain
- felt tip, oil pastel, ink, collage

Ice
- felt tip, oil pastel, ink, watercolour, collage

-

I am having so much fun experimenting with all these different medias all at once, this week I focused on cutting up old pieces I was dissatisfied with. Giving them new focus and worth

I am also taking over the Get Messy Instagram account this week so come over and say hi!

GET MESSY 2017 | NATURE WEEK 1

We have entered a new season of Get Messy - Nature.

I love this theme and have so many ideas already!!!

But first, this initial week. We were prompted to look to animals who inspire us in nature. Naturally, mine is a fox - my spirit animal. I focused on the movement and colour of foxes, their fluffy tails and sprightly jumping to create this series that I am a little bit in love with...

52 PORTRAITS | NOVEMBER

November was the fourth month of my portrait project and I am happily working my way through my list. Each week I try and think about where I am or what is happening in the world and my life - to suit each image to the current climate. This means that there will for sure be some festive entries in December!

You can follow my weekly progress (I post a new portrait every Sunday) on Instagram under the tag - #julias52portraits

Mirrors

I am a magpie when it comes to shiny things. Mirrors especially. I wouldn't say I am overly vain, but instead, just completely fascinated with how I appear to everyone else other than myself. The fact that you never can see yourself how others see you perplexes me and when I am talking to you but looking at my reflection, this is what I am trying to see! My mum and husband both won't have conversations with me near windows or mirrors because I just stare at myself. Lost in an otherworldly trance of what I look like when animated. It's a weird personality trait and I'm trying to get better at managing it… no one wants to be self obsessed but I can't quite keep the curiosity at bay...!

15/52

Me Time

I use creating art as purely selfish me time. Where I can just be doing what I enjoy the most - making a mess, playing with colour and splattering ink. Before I started this almost daily practice of art I yearned for more creative time. It has slowly become how I process my emotions and where I am always happy. Always creating. Always myself.

16/52

Grandparents

Here is my happy place. With my beloved grandparents. I know how lucky I am to have them both still here at the age of 29 and I try to cherish every moment with them. They have always been my favourite people, ever since I was small and it is here in between them between them both that is my happiest place on earth

17/52

Animal Rights

I was raised in a household that only used cruelty free products, supported animal rights charities and exclusively bought free range. I have taken up the same practices in my adult life and certainly have my vegetarian mum to thank for a lot of it. Never sugarcoating anything to me, I grew up knowing the details of animal testing for cosmetics, the violent use of fur and feathers in commercial goods, the inhumane keeping of battery farmed animals and how a lot of cats and dogs are bred for the pet market. My love for all living creatures is a massive part of my life and belief system. I hate to see any animal suffering - cute or not and can’t understand how we still have so many barbaric practices in our country and world today. I proudly wear fake fur, use cruelty free cosmetics, donate to the WWF, don’t eat meat and fully support the #adoptdontshop movement. If you are interested in any of the points I referenced for this weeks portrait, I would suggest the following documentaries: Carnage, Blackfish and Vegucated

ABSTRACTS | 07

When I got back from Japan at the end of October, I set myself a new creative intention - actually my first ever.

I wanted to explore abstract art. Ever since then, i have created small abstract pieces every week and I am currently trying to figure out how I can grow them in scale and size.

This week, all my pieces started from a new set of neon sharpies that I got. I then layered on felt tips, oil pastel, watercolour and finally ink.

This has been my sequential method of creating and I love that even though I am repeating the same recipe over and over... I am getting new results every time!

Firework - Orange

Bloom - Pink

Static - Yellow
